This month the #StampingDiversity Design Team is sharing New Years celebrations and traditions from around the world. While January 1 is the start of the year for most of the world, at least those that use a Gregorian calendar, that’s not always the case. I chose to feature a celebration that is not even close to January 1!
Matariki is the Māori name for the Pleiades star cluster, and it’s first rising, usually in late June or early July, is celebrated as the start of a new year. Each of the nine stars in the cluster hold special meaning, each of which is celebrated during this time:
- Matariki – Well-being and health
- Tupu-ā-rangi – Food that comes from above
- Tupu-ā-nuku – Food that grows in the soil
- Ururangi – The winds
- Waipunā-ā-rangi – Rainwater
- Hiwa-i-te-rangi – Growth and prosperity
- Waitī – Fresh water
- Waitā – The ocean
- Pōhutukawa – The deceased

I did take some creative liberty with my card, I wasn’t able to get the stars perfectly positioned…
A little pro tip for using the Mini Alphabet die is that you can cut your scraps, back them with adhesive sheets, and LABEL THEM so you know what’s what when you go to cut them.
For the inside of the card I went all out too, even used up some extra stars! But here’s how I fit the background stamp and the sentiment into a flat space…
