Last year I was very lucky to be able to check off a bucket list item and spend a couple weeks on Haida Gawii working. I got to explore some of the forests and beaches of the islands, and getting to know the people who live and work there. One of the first things I learned was the Haida word for “thank you”, which is “haw’aa”. I had this idea for a card and when I came home I had to make it!

Haw'aa means Thank You in Haida. This card was created for the Crafty Collaborations World Languages blog hop using a stamp I found designed by Eugene Isaac, a Namgis and Kwakwaka'wakw artist.

The first nations artist, Eugene Isaac, who created the sun stamp I used is not Haida, but Namgis and Kwakwaka’wakw, which is ironically one of the nations from the area I grew up in. I wish I could provide you a link or resource to get stamps like this, but I haven’t been able to find them again from when I found them on marketplace years ago. So instead, here’s another look at my cards…

Let’s see what everyone else has created celebrating languages around the world!

And of course you can recreate this card with the supplies below, using any word or phrase you’d like! Just click on the items to be taken to my store, where you will also earn a free PDF tutorial bundle when you place a minimum order and use my host code!
